Project planning guide

Plan paint from surface measurements to the final order

Paint planning is more than multiplying wall area by a coverage number. Separate walls, ceilings, trim, primer, and finish coats because each product can have a different coverage rate and pack size. Keep openings, waste, and can rounding visible instead of hiding them inside one rough estimate.

Use the calculators as a measurement and comparison workflow. Read the product label before buying, test physical colour samples in the room, and rerun the estimate when the number of coats, surface condition, or chosen product changes.

Before you calculate or buy

  • Record wall length, width, height, and excluded openings in one unit.
  • Use the coverage figure for the exact product and surface where possible.
  • Keep primer, ceiling paint, and trim paint as separate calculations.
  • Round to the actual can sizes sold only after the litres are estimated.
  • Retain a small labelled amount for later touch-ups when practical.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying a waste allowance twice by increasing both area and the final litres.
  • Assuming one coverage rate applies to rough, absorbent, previously painted, and newly primed surfaces.
  • Rounding litres too early and losing a small amount that later changes the pack count.
  • Treating a screen colour or palette suggestion as a physical paint match.
