What the Tile Quantity Calculator actually calculates
The tool divides surface area by the tile's face area, applies the waste percentage, and rounds up to whole tiles. It does not model joint widths, edge cuts, pattern layout, or tile orientation. Whole-box rounding must be handled separately.
The calculation path
Surface area is divided by one tile’s face area and rounded up after the waste factor.
Inputs that can change the answer
- Surface area: Enter surface area in m².
- Tile length: Enter tile length in cm.
- Tile width: Enter tile width in cm.
- Waste allowance: Percentage applied at the stage shown in the method; enter 10 for ten percent.
Checks that stay outside the formula
Choose the cutting allowance from the proposed layout and installer guidance; a fixed percentage does not guarantee sufficient tiles.
A practical order for entering the data
- Enter the net floor or wall area to tile in square metres.
- Enter the tile face length and width in centimetres, not millimetres.
- Choose a cutting and breakage percentage, then compare the whole-tile count with supplier box quantities.
Project walkthrough: Plan tile quantity, grout, adhesive, and layout together
Engine check using the prefilled sample
Flooring example: surface area = 20 m², tile length = 60 cm, tile width = 60 cm and waste allowance = 10 %. Replace the sample dimensions and pack information with the measured floor and the exact product format you intend to order.
