What the Rug Size Calculator actually calculates
The tool adds twice the border to both group dimensions and multiplies the resulting rug dimensions for area. It assumes a rectangular rug extending equally on all sides. It does not select standard sizes, enforce room-edge gaps, or determine whether front legs, all legs, or dining-chair movement should be covered.
The calculation path
An equal border is added around the furniture group to create the rug target size.
Inputs that can change the answer
- Furniture group length: Enter furniture group length in m.
- Furniture group width: Enter furniture group width in m.
- Rug extension each side: Enter rug extension each side in m.
Checks that stay outside the formula
Choose the next standard size up rather than leaving front furniture legs off unintentionally.
A practical order for entering the data
- Measure the outer rectangle of the furniture group you want the rug to cover.
- Enter the equal rug extension desired beyond each edge.
- Compare the target dimensions with available rug sizes and check the chosen footprint against doors and surrounding floor space.

Engine check using the prefilled sample
Worked example: furniture group length = 2.4 m, furniture group width = 1.8 m and rug extension each side = 0.3 m. Replace the sample dimensions with the real room and furniture sizes, then check doors, drawers and walking paths on a scaled plan.
