What the Recessed Light Calculator actually calculates

Fixture count is room area times target lux divided by lumens per downlight, rounded up. The separate spacing guideline is ceiling height times 0.75. The engine does not construct a grid or check the count against that spacing; utilization losses, maintenance, beam angle, task-plane height, and glare are not included.

The calculation path

Target lumens determine fixture count; spacing is a separate ceiling-height heuristic, not a checked grid.

Inputs that can change the answer

  • Room length: Enter room length in m.
  • Room width: Enter room width in m.
  • Target lux: Enter target lux in lux.
  • Lumens per downlight: Enter lumens per downlight in lm.
  • Ceiling height: Enter ceiling height in m.

Checks that stay outside the formula

Use beam-angle photometric data for high ceilings or demanding task areas.

A practical order for entering the data

  1. Enter room length, width, and the target average lux.
  2. Enter the lumen output of one downlight and the ceiling height in metres.
  3. Use the whole fixture count and spacing guideline as starting checks, then lay out a grid using the actual beam data.

Engine check using the prefilled sample

Lighting example: room length = 5 m, room width = 4 m, target lux = 200 lux, lumens per downlight = 750 lm and ceiling height = 2.7 m. Treat these as demonstration room and fixture values, then recalculate with the dimensions and rated output of the fittings you are considering.

Worked example and purchase checks

The tool estimates the room lumen requirement from area and target lux, divides by the rated lumens of one downlight, rounds up to a whole fixture count, and provides a simple spacing reference linked to room dimensions.

Illustrative worked example

A 5.4 m × 4.1 m room comparing 820-lumen recessed fixtures before a ceiling layout is drawn.

How to read the result

Use the count as an output benchmark. Plot candidate fixture positions on the ceiling plan and check the exact product photometrics and installation requirements before finalizing.

Assumptions this example makes

  • Every downlight has the same rated lumen output.
  • A regular layout is being considered for a rectangular room.

What this calculator does not prove

  • Beam angle, photometric distribution, wall-wash needs, joists, ducts, insulation, fire rating, dimming, and electrical rules are not evaluated.
  • Even spacing is not always the best lighting layout.
Recessed-light planning gridSketch is explanatory, not to scale.

Mistakes that change this result

  1. Using lamp wattage instead of rated fixture lumens.
  2. Placing a perfect grid before checking cabinets, worktops, artwork, and ceiling obstructions.
  3. Treating the suggested count as electrical design approval.

Recessed Light Calculator — Lighting questions before choosing fixtures

Does changing ceiling height increase the fixture count?

No. In this tool it changes only the spacing guideline, not the lumen calculation or count.

Is the spacing result a guaranteed maximum for every downlight?

No. Actual spacing depends on optics, mounting height above the task plane, and the desired uniformity.
