Room & Space Tools

Measure rooms, test clearances, and make every square foot work harder.

Project planning guide

Measure the room before deciding what will fit

Area is useful for flooring and broad comparisons, but furniture fit depends on wall lengths, clearances, door swings, fixed fittings, and the delivery route. Two rooms with the same square metres can behave very differently once circulation and storage are considered.

Start with a dated sketch and raw measurements. Calculate floor area, perimeter, wall area, and usable zones separately so one figure is not asked to answer every planning question.

Before you calculate or buy

  • Sketch every wall and label doors, windows, radiators, columns, and fixed cupboards.
  • Measure the narrowest delivery points as well as the room itself.
  • Keep floor area, perimeter, wall area, and clearance dimensions separate.
  • For irregular rooms, divide the plan into non-overlapping simple shapes.
  • Mark the opened position of doors, drawers, and large furniture before ordering.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using floor area alone to decide whether a sofa, table, or wardrobe fits.
  • Ignoring handles, skirting, door swings, and projecting radiators.
  • Mixing metres, centimetres, feet, and inches in the same calculation.
  • Rounding a tight dimension before checking the smallest measured point.
